Distribution of NGO Aid Slow in Port au Prince

(22 Jan 2010)

As of Friday 22 Jan 2010 little aid can be witnessed on streets of Port au Prince. The Haitian population are living on the streets due to a complete lack of trust in all structures. This has led to significant outdoor makeshift camps which occupy all large public spaces. These camps in addition are being placed on roads at night time which makes travelling hazardous.

The US contingent is carrying out an extensive operation at the airport and have been welcomed by the Haitians, however all NGO’s are also operating from this location and as such the external approaches to the airport are heavily congested. All embassies and consulates are continuing with the evacuation of staff and citizens which compound airports access issues. While the Rescue Team’s have achieved a significant task and will indeed continue over the coming days. The NGO have been lethargic in distributing aid and little relief has been afforded to the population.
